Description

Pestle, early 20th c Provenance: Emile Deletaille, Brussels Wooden pestles from Nias are extremely rare. Beautifully carved, this pestle's base exhibits a unique wear pattern from continued use as a grinding implement, while a smooth patina on the handle suggests where it was grasped. The rounded shape of the pestle's head has been carved in Nias style. Oval eyes and a sharp pointed nose, create a bold profile while repetitive geometric designs decorate the body. The small arch at the back of it's head remind the viewer of its tangibility, as a utilitarian object. Height: 16 1/2 in
